Getting to the Tamar Valley by Rail
Traveling to the Tamar Valley by train is simple and convenient, with excellent rail connections to and from the region. Mainline inter-city services from London, Scotland, and the North of England stop at Plymouth, with many also calling at Saltash Station, just across the River Tamar in southeast Cornwall, before continuing to Penzance.
The journey from London Paddington takes around three and a half hours. In Devon, parts of the route hug the coastline and cross the picturesque Exe, Teign, and Dart estuaries, making the trip a scenic experience in itself. Plymouth Station is a key hub, offering easy connections to other parts of the country. For onward journeys, visit the GWR website for up-to-date information. Additionally, the recently reopened Okehampton line now links eastward to Exeter.
The Southwest boasts a network of scenic main and branch lines, offering stunning views of coastal landscapes, lush countryside, wooded valleys, and river crossings. Among these, the Tamar Valley line is a true gem, winding through one of Britain’s National Landscapes. Stretching 15 miles from Plymouth to Gunnislake via Calstock, this line connects the city, river, and countryside in a journey rich with natural beauty.
